Excursion to Schweinfurt

The picture shows 11 adults standing in Schweinfurt's central square. The group is standing directly in front of a bronze statue, with a church bell tower visible in the background. They are all wearing casual clothes and smiling at the camera.
The employees of CS6 in Schweinfurt

For many years now, the research assistants at the Chair of Computer Science have been organizing an excursion for all employees of the chair. This year, Demian Vöhringer continued this wonderful tradition. He invited us to his hometown Schweinfurt on July 25, in perfect weather.

In the morning, our tour took us through the historic old town, past numerous sights; the beautiful Renaissance town hall, the city walls, the Ebracher Hof, the Zürch (Schweinfurt’s oldest district), and the old scrap tower are just a few of them. Our guide entertained us along the way with anecdotes about the famous and influential industrial families who have impacted the city over the years: Sattler, Fischer, Schäfer, Sachs…

After lunch, we visited the Industrial Museum. Schweinfurt’s industrial history was very evident here. Various exhibits were on display, such as a radial engine, a Torpedo freewheel hub (Sachs), and a Saxonette (Sachs moped). But it was the invention and production of ball bearings that made the city really famous. In a separate room, the ball manufacturing process was explained to us in a very clear way.

In the late afternoon, we took the train back home. Thank you very much, Demian Vöhringer, for the great trip!
