Last Friday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Daniel Krauss, Co-Founder and CIO of Flix, to our chair for a guest lecture. As part of the Knowledge Discovery in Databases course, he spoke to an audience of approximately 80 to 90 attendees on the topic of “Data Science at Flix.”
The lecture began at 10:45 a.m. in lecture hall H18. Over the course of approximately 40 minutes, Daniel Krauss provided practical insights into the role of data and data science at Flix. He explained how the company’s data organization has evolved in recent years and highlighted the importance of a scalable data infrastructure for an internationally operating travel technology company.
Using specific examples, he demonstrated how data and machine learning are applied to tasks such as forecasting travel patterns, planning the route network, and adapting service offerings to anticipated demand. He also addressed topics including data mesh, decentralized data teams, and the provision of reusable data products.
The lecture was followed by a highly engaging discussion. Until noon, Daniel Krauss answered numerous questions from the audience and spoke candidly about practical challenges, technical decisions, and data-related work at Flix. Interest was so strong that there would easily have been enough additional questions to continue the discussion for another 30 minutes. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Daniel Krauss for the engaging and practice-oriented insights, as well as to all attendees for their strong interest and active participation in the discussion.
